Goats in general are good for environment and will clear weeds & brush acreages. Our Texas Nubian dairy goats are acclimated to our type of environments and plants species, and do very well at meeting most their nutritional needs.
Not just any goat! Many breed types of goats (small or large sized for sale every day). Not all goats are created equal. Like puppy mills there is also mass sold goats, and there are high end breeders with integrity and testing's care of goats. Whether one wants to show a goat or not, would hope a person would want a healthy long-lived goat. Sun Browsers is very picky about genetics faults, disease, immunity systems, rumen health, and structure of a beneficial milking goat. We want milk ability and an udder that can give milk for years forward. Goats' business can be no different than a puppy mill breeder and business. BEWARE! Heartbreaks of loss goats are common in the goat community when buying from untested disease and poor managements. A good breeder will disease test their herd. Sun Browsers policy is if we wouldn't choose to breed it, not selling you the reject goats. Personally, wouldn't give up our goats, the sales are only to prevent inbred relative goats.
Depending on the goals, goats can be a "big" investment. Depending on location, also a difference in cost of goats. I've paid as much as 600.00 for successful milking lines goat. For the best registered pure-bred Goats, prices can run into the thousands, depending on their pedigree and performance records, milk quality, and genetic structures. ADGA (American Dairy Goat Association) New York annual goat show, a goat sold for $30,000.
If your bargain hunting or buying from a sale barn/auction, not likely any guarantees of healthy disease free, structurally sound goat. Most goats at such places are the unwanted & culled goats. Pedigrees are seldom offered in such cases. Like any other pedigreed animals, can be a "high price for best genetic bred & known linages with goats".
Sun browsers does not buy auction goats, all our goats are registered and annually disease tested and from farms that do the same care programs we do>
A friend bought an auction goat (did not look diseased), this goat wiped out her whole herd within a couple weeks after bringing the goat home.
Auctions offer cheaper goats; they do not guarantee disease free goats. My suggestion is choose & invest wisely and understand goats are everywhere, but good goats for a lifetime are hard to find and pricey. When owning goats, caring and cost-effective managements depends on the quality of breeder & goats. Personally, I love a hardy goat that won't fall apart in a couple years and produces quality milk for me. That comes with a price and not just any goat will do.
A good goat will have a good smooth connected structure that flows together, and their relatives will too. Hooves, pasterns, back, rump, legs, barrel, neck. Internet has tons of info on what a good goat supposed to be. Best to learn this in the beginning, as it is something you will learn eventually when starting a herd for business or homestead, easy or the hard way.

Not just the history of the goat and all that pedigree info, but what about the breeder? what are their methods of care? how long have they had their goats? Are they Tested for diseases? As to methods of caring, as said before, we are holistic care and minimal commercial feeding, but there are other methods of caring for a good and healthy goat, other then holistic. Recommending a new goat owner follow the suggestions of care from the breeders experiences, where the goat is bought from.
